14:00-14:45: Sian E Harding - Human stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes for pharmacological studies
The cardiac field has lacked a human cell line with authentic contractile function, and cardiomyocytes derived from human embryonic and induced pluripotent cells are hoped to fill this gap. How far do the responses of these cells resemble those of adult human ventricular myocytes, and are there real advantages over animal cells?

15:00-15:45: Rodolphe Fischmeister - Cardiac cAMP signaling: from subcellular microdomains to heart failure
Although an acute stimulation of the cAMP pathway is beneficial for the heart, a sustained activation leads to hypertrophic growth, ventricular dysfunction and, ultimately, to heart failure. A possible explanation for the “good” acute and “bad” chronic effects of cAMP may reside in the capacity of the cell to maintain proper cAMP signaling microdomains. That capacity may be overwhelmed in a chronic setting, resulting in a global and deleterious rise in cAMP.
